Imaging a child born into a family where the parents tell them from the time they could talk; you’re worthless, no one will ever love you, you’re useless and ugly, you will never amount to anything! What do you think that child will turn out like by the time they’re a teen? I bet you’ll agree that most likely they’ll be a living train wreck.
Imagine that same child filled with words like, you are loved, special, a gift from God, born to do great things. You are beautiful, talented and worthy of honor. I bet you’ll agree that this child will turn out much different than the first on!
Words have power! The intent behind them can manifest life or death. This doesn’t mean we are God, it simply means we are created in His likeness and the way He designed this world allows us to use our thoughts to generate words that have the ability to empower or disempower others as well as ourselves.
The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. Proverbs 18:21 (NIV)
As a professional coach/mentor to business owners one of the first things I address with my clients is the inner thought life, you know, that conversation going on inside your head every moment of your waking day.
No matter how financially successful my clients are, they still deal with disempowering self talk that’s impacting their spiritual walk, health and relationships. Our words make a difference. They need to be weighed carefully before being released from our mouths.
I believe it’s imperative that we implement regular prayer seeking the Holy Spirit to guide our thought life. We need to commit to studying, memorizing and meditating on God’s Word.
Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart Be acceptable in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19:14
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success. Joshua 1:8
Consider these words from a song I love.
“Some days the tongue gets twisted;
Other days my thoughts just fall apart.
I do, I don’t, I will, I won’t,
It’s like I’m drowning in the deep.
Well it’s crazy to imagine,
Words from our lips as the arms of compassion,
Mountains crumble with every syllable.
Hope can live or die.
So speak Life, speak Life.
To the deadest darkest night.
Speak life, speak Life.
When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why.
Look into the eyes of the brokenhearted;
Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope,
You speak love, you speak…
You speak Life”
